So when Goldman wanted to assess the state of refugee services in Utah, and how they could be improved to better the community, they enlisted Emperitas for our market research expertise.
Solution
A complicating issue in assessing the state of refugee services in Utah was the number of service providers and the fact that refugee-related services are usually one part of a larger list of options provided by each service organization. To deal with this, we conducted a series of focus groups and in-depth interviews to get a qualitative understanding of refugee needs, and the state of the entire services ecosystem.
These interviews allowed Emperitas to map out the main providers and build a dataset of services offered, their geolocation, and details about the number and pattern of refugees serviced. From there, a quantitative survey was given to the entire services and refugee communities, and through extensive data mining, a detailed needs assessment was created and shared throughout the Utah Nonprofit community.
Result
Our research results were widely published and made it all the way to the governor’s office, where they were instrumental in Utah’s decision to continue its open-door policy for refugees over the last few years. Since then, service providers have better coordinated to ensure minimal overlap and maximum availability for refugees, creating stronger bonds of inclusion in the Utah community.
